Mechanism of action
Verampil inhibits the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into cardiac muscle and vascular smooth muscle cells. This relaxation of vascular smooth muscle dilates arterioles, decreasing peripheral vascular resistance and reducing blood pressure, whilst also slowing conduction through the atrioventricular node.
