Mechanism of action
Ketoconazole inhibits the cytochrome P450-dependent synthesis of ergosterol in fungal cell membranes. It also possesses a secondary pharmacological effect of inhibiting adrenal steroid biosynthesis, which is how it is used to manage high cortisol levels.
