What is mepolizumab used for?
Mepolizumab, sold under the brand name Nucala by GlaxoSmithKline, is a humanized monoclonal antibody used for the treatment of severe eosinophilic asthma, eosinophilic granulomatosis, and hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES). It recognizes and blocks interleukin-5 (IL-5), a signalling protein of the immune system.

Does Nucala contain mepolizumab?
Nucala contains the active ingredient mepolizumab. (An active ingredient is what makes a drug work.) Nucala is available in three forms, all of which are given as an injection under the skin: Nucala is a biologic medication. Biologics are made using parts of living organisms. Nucala is not available in a biosimilar form.
Can I use Nucala If I am allergic to mepolizumab?
NUCALA is an add-on, prescription maintenance treatment for patients 6 and older with severe eosinophilic asthma. NUCALA is not used to treat sudden breathing problems. Do not use NUCALA if you are allergic to mepolizumab or any of the ingredients in NUCALA. Do not use to treat sudden breathing problems.
What is the difference between Nucala 100 mg and mepolizumab 75 mg?
Compared with placebo, patients receiving NUCALA 100 mg or mepolizumab 75 mg IV experienced significantly fewer exacerbations. Additionally, compared with placebo, there were fewer exacerbations requiring hospitalization and/or emergency department visits and exacerbations requiring only in-patient hospitalization with NUCALA 100 mg (Table 4).
How often should I take mepolizumab & Nucala?
The recommended dose of mepolizumab is 40 mg administered subcutaneously once every 4 weeks. Nucala is intended for long-term treatment. The need for continued therapy should be considered at least on an annual basis as determined by physician assessment of the patient’s disease severity and level of control of exacerbations.
