Atrovent HFA is a bronchodilator that’s approved for the maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Atrovent HFA should not be used to treat acute bronchospasm. Atrovent HFA contains the active drug ipratropium bromide (an anticholinergic bronchodilator).

Atrovent is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and increases air flow to the lungs. Atrovent is used to to prevent bronchospasm, or narrowing airways in the lungs, in people with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Is Atrovent HFA available in generic form?

The Atrovent HFA inhaler is not available in generic form. However, ipratropium bromide (the active drug in Atrovent HFA) is available as a solution for nebulization. It comes in vials that contain 0.5 mg of ipratropium bromide per vial. Ipratropium bromide vials are used in a machine called a nebulizer.

What are the side effects of Atrovent?

Additional adverse reactions reported in less than three percent of the patients treated with Atrovent include tachycardia, palpitations, eye pain, urinary retention, urinary tract infection and urticaria. Cases of precipitation or worsening of narrow-angle glaucoma and acute eye pain have been reported.

Is Atrovent inhalation solution safe if mixed with other drugs?

Drug stability and safety of Atrovent Inhalation Solution when mixed with other drugs in a nebulizer have not been established. Patients should be reminded that Atrovent Inhalation Solution should be used consistently as prescribed throughout the course of therapy.

What are the side effects of Atrovent HFA?

The most common side effects reported with use of ATROVENT HFA were bronchitis, COPD flare‑up (exacerbation), shortness of breath and headache. Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking, including eye drops.
