As a single agent, ipratropium was indicated for the symptomatic relief of rhinorrhea associated with the common cold or seasonal allergic rhinitis for patients 5 years or older. It does not alleviate nasal congestion nor sneezing. Label Rhinorrhea refers to recurrent or chronic watery nasal discharge.
How does ipratropium work?
It works by opening up the air passages in your lungs so that air can flow into your lungs more freely. Ipratropium can be helpful in relieving symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and chronic asthma. In these conditions, the airflow to the lungs is restricted and this causes symptoms such as cough, wheeze, and breathlessness.
What is ipratropium bromide used for?
Ipratropium bromide, sold under the trade name Atrovent among others, is a type of anticholinergic (SAMA: short acting muscarinic antagonist) medication which opens up the medium and large airways in the lungs.
