Interestingly, the protective effects of the flu vaccine may extend beyond just warding off the flu itself. Some research suggests that flu shots could also help reduce the severity of asthma symptoms, even in those who do end up contracting influenza. A 2018 study found that asthma patients who received the flu vaccine experienced less severe bronchospasm and used their rescue inhalers less often during flu season.

Of course, individual experiences may vary. Not everyone with asthma will see the same dramatic benefits from the flu shot. "It's important to remember that the flu vaccine isn't 100% effective," cautions Dr. Atchison. "There are many different flu virus strains out there, and the vaccine may not always be a perfect match. But even partial protection is better than none at all."

For asthma sufferers, the flu shot may be one of the most important preventative measures they can take. And the benefits go beyond just warding off respiratory infections - flu vaccination has also been linked to reduced risk of heart attack, stroke and death in people with chronic lung diseases like asthma.
