Understanding and Managing General Pain
General Pain FAQ
What is chronic pain?
Chronic pain (also called long-term pain or persistent pain) is pain that lasts for more than three months. Pain can be caused by (secondary to) an underlying condition (such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, or endometriosis ). Chronic pain can also be primary.
Is there a clinical guideline on chronic pain?
The Department of Health in England has asked NICE to develop a clinical guideline on chronic pain. The guideline covers all people with chronic pain (also known as persistent pain or long-term pain). The guideline will use the ICD-11 Beta Draft definition of chronic pain, which is ‘pain that persists or recurs for longer than 3 months’.
What are the different types of pain?
Health professionals use different terms for different types of pain. Short-term pain is called Acute Pain. An example is a sprained ankle. Long-term is called Persistent or Chronic Pain. Back trouble or arthritis are examples. Pain that comes and goes is called Recurrent or Intermittent Pain. A tooth ache could be one.
How do you understand persistent pain?
To be able to understand persistent pain it is first helpful to look at pain in general. Pain is the brain’s way of telling you that it perceives danger. This is to prompt you to take action to stop causing damage or further damage by keeping you safe.
