What is spirosmart?

SpiroSmart is a research app to let people test their lung function using only a smartphone. S. Patel, Univ. of Washington A new tool from researchers at the University of Washington, UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s hospital lets people monitor their lung function at home or on the go simply by blowing into their smartphones.

What is spirocall and how does it work?

“With SpiroCall, you can call a 1-800 number, blow into the phone and use the telephone network to test your lung function.” In 2012, researchers from the UW’s UbiComp Lab introduced SpiroSmart — which lets people monitor their lung function by blowing into their smartphones.

How does a spirometer work?

Existing spirometers have patients with chronic lung ailments such as asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchitis blow into a tube with a small turbine that measures the speed of the flow. Patients take a deep breath in, then exhale as hard and fast as they can until they can’t blow any more.

Is there a spriosmart app?

There may be an app for that. SprioSmart uses a smartphone's microphone to take lung measurements of breath capacity. For people with pulmonary problems like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cystic fibrosis, this easy to use method may be a game changer.
