How does Spiriva Respimat work?

Spiriva Respimat comes in a cartridge that is inserted into a special inhaler device provided with this medicine. Turning the base of the Respimat device until it clicks will release the medicine into the inhaler chamber. You will need 2 puffs to get a full dose.

What is Spiriva used for?

Spiriva is used to prevent bronchospasm (narrowing of the airways in the lungs) in adults with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), including bronchitis and emphysema. Spiriva Respimat is also used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children who are at least 6 years old. Spiriva HandiHaler is not for use in children.

Can Spiriva Respimat be used to treat asthma?

Spiriva Respimat is prescribed to treat asthma in adults and in children ages 6 years and older. Spiriva Handihaler is not used to treat asthma. (The Handihaler is used to treat COPD only.) With asthma, you have inflammation (swelling) and narrowing of your airways. This can cause wheezing, cough, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

What is Spiriva Respimat® (tiotropium)?

It contains the active ingredient tiotropium which is a bronchodilator (long-acting muscarinic antagonist). SPIRIVA® Respimat® helps to open the airways and get air in and out of the lungs. SPIRIVA® Respimat® (tiotropium) should be used in addition to so-called inhaled corticosteroids and other bronchodilators (e.g., long-acting β2 agonists). 1

Does Spiriva Respimat help with COPD?

Regular use of Spiriva Respimat can also help you when you have on-going shortness of breath related to your disease, and will help to minimise the effects of the disease on your everyday life. Daily use of Spiriva Respimat will also help to prevent any sudden, short-term worsening of your COPD symptoms which may last for several days.

When should I use Spiriva Respimat?

As COPD and asthma are long-term diseases you should use Spiriva Respimat every day and not only when you have breathing problems or other symptoms. When used to treat asthma you should use Spiriva Respimat in addition to so-called inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting P2 agonists.
