What is Petadolex ®?
It is produced from the rhizome of Petasites hybridus and is the only butterbur extract that was extensively evaluated for safety and clinical efficacy in the preventive treatment of migraine. Petadolex® was introduced 1972 in Germany and 1998 in the USA, and pharmacological research identified petasins as active ingredients.
Is Petadolex good for migraine?
Among the various butterbur extracts Petadolex® is a well-established herbal remedy for the prevention of migraine attacks. It is produced from the rhizome of Petasites hybridus and is the only butterbur extract that was extensively evaluated for safety and clinical efficacy in the preventive treatment of migraine.
Is Petadolex safe?
He highlighted that no adverse side effects were reported in either the U.S. or Canada after 1.3 million patient months of Petadolex use. Up until recently, major studies concluded that PA-free butterbur products are safe and well tolerated if taken orally in recommended doses for up to 16 weeks.

What are the pharmacologically active components of Petadolex?
The main pharmacologically active components of the P. hybridus plant belong to the group of sesquiterpenes and include petasin and isopetasin, which are present at a minimum of 15% in the special butterbur root extract Petadolex.
Is Petadolex available in Germany?
Alternatively, proven PA-free butterbur extracts could be listed along with the brand names in migraine guidelines. Petadolex is not available in Germany and the United Kingdom anymore. The manufacturer has not obtained a new approval in these countries. A full documentation, as for a new drug application, would have been mandatory.
