Masks FAQ
What is a mask used for?
A mask is an object normally worn on the face, typically for protection, disguise, performance, or entertainment, and often employed for rituals and rites. Masks have been used since antiquity for both ceremonial and practical purposes, as well as in the performing arts and for entertainment.
What is a decorative mask?
Decorative masks may be worn as part of a costume outside of ritual or ceremonial functions. This is often described as a masque, and relates closely to carnival styles. For example, attendants of a costume party will sometimes wear masks as part of their costumes.
How does a face mask work?
The mask has a flexible nose bridge to conform to the face and prevent fogging of eyeglasses. It stays in place while talking and moving, so it can be worn without slipping and so it does not require you to touch it frequently.
Why do people wear face masks?
Face masks are a symbol of the pandemic era – a visual metaphor for the tiny, unseen viral foe that could be lurking around any corner. Some opt for a scarf wrapped around their face, others make do with a t-shirt yanked up over their mouth.
