Indacaterol: Enhancing Airway Relaxation for COPD
Indacaterol FAQ
What is indacaterol used for?
Indacaterol inhalation is used to control wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; a group of diseases that affect the lungs and airways, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). Indacaterol is in a class of medications called long-acting beta agonists (LABAs).
How do I use indacaterol?
Keep using indacaterol as you have been told by your doctor or other health care provider, even if you feel well. Use indacaterol at the same time of day. Take the capsule out of the foil right before use. If you are using more than 1 inhaled drug, ask the doctor which drug to use first. Do not use a spacer with the inhaler.
Is indacaterol a bronchodilator?
COPD is a long-term lung disease that causes bronchospasm (wheezing or difficulty with breathing). Indacaterol is a long-acting bronchodilator. Bronchodilators are medicines that are breathed in through the mouth to open up the bronchial tubes (air passages) in the lungs.
Is indacaterol a chiral molecule?
It was approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on 30 November 2009 and by the FDA on 1 July 2011. It is marketed in Europe as Onbrez and in America as Arcapta Neohaler. Indacaterol is provided as its maleate salt form. Indacaterol is also a chiral molecule but only the pure R-enantiomer is dispensed.
Is indacaterol a long-acting beta-adrenoceptor agonist?
Indacaterol is an ultra- long-acting beta-adrenoceptor agonist developed by Novartis. It needs to be taken only once a day, unlike the related drugs formoterol and salmeterol. It is licensed only for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (long-term data in patients with asthma are thus far lacking).
