What is cromolyn used for?

Cromolyn is used to treat the symptoms of mastocytosis. Mastocytosis is a rare condition caused by too many mast cells in the body. These mast cells release substances that cause the symptoms of the disease, such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, flushing or itching of skin, or hives.

What is cromolyn sodium?

Cromolyn sodium was derived from furanochromone, khellin, a natural drug product extracted from an eastern Mediterranean herb called Ammi visnaga. The key active constituents of khellin were chromones; some of these chromones could delay the onset of bronchial antigen-induced distress in guinea pigs.

Is cromolyn a bronchodilator?

It is not immediate-acting, has no direct bronchodilator effects, and thus does not treat acute asthma attacks. Cromolyn Sodium Oral Solution (Concentrate) is used to improve symptoms of diarrhea, flushing, headaches, vomiting, urticaria, abdominal pain, nausea, and itching in some patients.

How does cromolyn & nedocromil work?

"Cromolyn works because it prevents the release of mediators that would normally attract inflammatory cells and because it stabilizes the inflammatory cells. MCT mast cells found in the mucosa are stabilised." Nedocromil is another mast cell stabilizer that also works in controlling asthma.
