The genus Bifidobacterium inhabits intestinal tracts of humans and animals. It is one of the first microorganisms to colonize the host gut [ 12 ]. It has more than 50 different species, of which, Bifidobacterium longum is one of the most abundant microorganisms in the intestines of infants and adults [ 8, 9 ].

Diseases inside and outside the intestine are closely related to the changes in the abundance of Bifidobacterium longum. This occurred as the three species had extensive DNA similarity including a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity greater than 97%.
