Understanding and Eliminating Mildew
Mildew FAQ
What is the difference between Mold and mildew?
It is distinguished from its closely related counterpart, mold, largely by its colour: molds appear in shades of black, blue, red, and green, whereas mildew is white. It appears as a thin, superficial growth consisting of minute hyphae ( fungal filaments) produced especially on living plants or organic matter such as wood, paper or leather.
What is mildew & why is it a problem?
The term mildew is often used generically to refer to mold growth, usually with a flat growth habit. Molds can thrive on many organic materials, including clothing, leather, paper, and the ceilings, walls and floors of homes or offices with poor moisture control.
What causes mildew to grow?
Dampness: Any surface or material that remains consistently damp or wet can promote mildew growth. This can occur due to leaks, condensation, or prolonged exposure to moisture. Organic materials: Mildew feeds on organic materials like wood, paper, fabrics, and even dust. If these materials are exposed to moisture, mildew can develop.
Is mildew a fungus?
Mildew is a form of fungus. It is distinguished from its closely related counterpart, mold, largely by its colour: molds appear in shades of black, blue, red, and green, whereas mildew is white.
What is mildew fungi?
mildew, a conspicuous mass of white threadlike hyphae and fruiting structures produced by various fungi. Mildew is commonly associated with damp cloth, fibres, leather goods, and several plant diseases ( downy mildew and powdery mildew ). Mildew-causing fungi use these substances as sources of food for growth and reproduction.
What does mildew look like?
Mildew is usually a thin dusting of a black, grey, or (rarely) white growth, appearing on fabric, upholstery and occasionally walls. Mildew is a type of mould, which in turn is a category covering a very small kind of fungi. Indoors, grey-black powdery mildew is the most commonly encountered kind of growth and is easily recognisable.
What is powdery mildew?
Powdery mildews are a group of closely related species of fungi that are very similar in appearance, producing a 'powdery' effect on the surfaces of plants. The powdery effect is caused by fungal strands throwing out thousands of spores.
What is mold & mildew?
It appears as a thin, superficial growth consisting of minute hyphae ( fungal filaments) produced especially on living plants or organic matter such as wood, paper or leather.
