How do I get rid of dust mites in my home?
In most homes, such items as bedding, upholstered furniture and carpeting provide an ideal environment for dust mites. By taking steps to reduce the number of dust mites in your home, you may get control of dust mite allergy. Medications or other treatments are sometimes necessary to relieve symptoms and manage asthma.
What do dust mites eat?
They feed primarily on dander, or flakes of dead skin that fall from humans and animals. Dust consists of skin particles, animal fur, and dirt from outside. It also contains dust mite feces and decomposing dust mite bodies. It is a protein in the feces and dead mites that cause the bite-like rash on humans.
Can a dust mite allergy cause a runny nose?
A dust mite allergy can range from mild to severe. A mild case of dust mite allergy may cause an occasional runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing. In severe cases, the condition may be ongoing (chronic), resulting in persistent sneezing, cough, congestion, facial pressure, an eczema flare-up or severe asthma attack.
Can dust mites cause allergies?
Generally, the more dust mite exposure you have (number of mites, time exposed, or both), the more severe your symptoms will be. That said, some people have very powerful allergic or asthmatic reactions even with minimal contact. Allergies may be limited to nasal congestion or can involve the skin or lungs.
