Asthma Triggers FAQ
What is an asthma trigger?
An asthma trigger is anything that can set off your asthma symptoms. Triggers can make your airways more inflamed and can cause asthma attacks. A few things happen when you come into contact with a trigger: Muscles around the airways tighten. The lining of the airways become swollen and inflamed. Sticky mucus can build up in the airways.
Why do some people get asthma?
It isn't clear why some people get asthma and others don't, but it's probably due to a combination of environmental and inherited (genetic) factors. Exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens) can trigger signs and symptoms of asthma.
What happens if you get a trigger for asthma?
A few things happen when you come into contact with a trigger: Muscles around the airways tighten. The lining of the airways become swollen and inflamed. Sticky mucus can build up in the airways. This is what causes your asthma symptoms, such as coughing, breathlessness, chest tightness, or wheezing.
What causes an asthma attack?
Physical exercise; some medicines; bad weather, such as thunderstorms or high humidity; breathing in cold, dry air; and some foods and fragrances can also trigger an asthma attack. Strong emotions can lead to very fast breathing, called hyperventilation, that can also cause an asthma attack.
What triggers your asthma symptoms?
Things that set off your asthma symptoms are called triggers. Finding out what sets off your symptoms - whether it's colds and viruses, pets, pollen, pollution, house dust mites, or stress - means you can work out ways to avoid your triggers if possible. There are certain stages in your life that might affect your asthma too.
